The areas I focused on Level One are: Reception, Waiting Area, and Juice Bar. There is also a Nurse's Location located on the first floor where the children will receive a check-up before they could stay at the retreat. A 24 hour medical staff is also located near the building. I didn't want to include too much medical staff in the building because I didn't want the space to feel like a hospital.

I custom designed a low profile desk so the children feel welcomed and not intimidated by employees when they enter the space, a cloud fixture made out of aluminum covered in tensile fabric to absorb noise, cushions in the shape of flowers made out of high density foam, and tree panels made out of laser cut MDF to be attached to the columns.

Children have a clear view of the Butterfly Tube and could look up above to the other floors of the building.

I also custom designed a low profile bar for the Juice Bar, and fixtures and a table inspired by bees and honeycombs.

After a morning hike, the children would return to The Juice Bar and make their own smoothies, They will also learn about fruits and vegetables and how important is it to take care of one's body.

A section cut of the building showing a closer look of the Butterfly Tube and the columns. Instead of hiding the columns, I wanted to purposely use them in my design so I could attach tree panels around the columns. Trees represent: life, wisdom, and a cure from illness. Just like the strength of the children, the columns also serve its functionality of supporting the building.

The areas I focused on the Second Level are: Dining Area and Living Room. This level also includes a Gym where children and parents could take classes together, a Movie Theatre which will host Movie Night and a seminar with a motivational speaker on their last day, and an art classroom.

I custom designed a table that was inspired by a Caterpillar and the spheres on the light fixture are made out of fabric from silkworms.

Children and their families could enjoy dinner with a beautiful view of Big Bear Lake.

Long communal tables so the children and families could all sit together and get to know one another.

Families will be welcomed with fresh fruit on their arrival and are served healthy and organic meals during their stay.

More pieces inspired by nature and I also included a stage in the Living Room with a chalkboard wall so children could draw their on sets.

Activities such as story-time, a talent show, and plays will take place in the Living Room.

Drawings on the wall are from past children who have stayed at the retreat.

I did not develop anything on Level Three because I focused on the areas where most of the social interaction between children and families would take place.

Sunshine Woods Camp

A weekend retreat designed for children who are in remission or healing from Cancer. This type of retreat will give children and their families a unique experience and an opportunity for them to bond together. The retreat includes activities for the children, helping them to be re-introduced into society. Inspired by elements such as nature, this retreat is one-of-a-kind and also features a three level Butterfly Tube which is the focus of the building. The Butterfly Tube is very symbolic to the building because butterflies symbolizes transformation, suggesting the transformation of the children from illness to remission. It also includes custom designed furniture and fixtures inspired by nature designed for children. I also produced my renderings in a unique way by combining three different methods. I first used Autodesk Revit for my views, hand traced and colored them, and then lastly brought back to the computer to complete on Adobe Photoshop.
